Making a Difference for Special Needs Cats

Making a Difference for Special Needs Cats
We have a need for Foster Homes on a continuing basis for many cats, who for one reason or another, do not adjust well to living with many other cats. Or may need, due to health reasons, to be separated from the larger cat population.

Becoming a Foster means you temporarily take a cat into your home for a period of time. You become responsible for all the cat's needs, food, shelter, care, and play, while they are living with you. Foster homes without other cats are usually recommended. We also ask that we be able to bring prospective adopters to your home, to help us place the foster cat in a permanent living situation.

It's a lot to ask but the personal rewards for becoming a Foster are immeasurable and it makes such a difference in the quality of the cat's life. If you're interested in becoming a Foster home, please email info@brigidscrossing.org or call (239) 594-2785.

Eight Reasons You Can Foster a Pet ó Even If You Think You Canít

By Emily Fromm

I encourage everyone I know to foster ó even if theyíre dead set on adopting.

Not only does fostering provide an invaluable service to rescue groups and the shelters who depend on foster homes (not to mention the pets themselves), itís a great way to learn about your own needs as a pet owner. (You canít know if youíve got what it takes to walk a young puppy at 1, 3 and 6 a.m. until youíve done it!)

But Iíve heard a lot of excuses ó er, reasons ó why people canít or donít want to foster. So I was delighted to get the article below in a newsletter from the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society, which answers just about every possible excuse. (It was written by Liz Pease, the shelterís director of operations.)

With shelters overflowing and many people needing temporary care for their pets while they find new housing or weather a crisis, fostering is even more important these days. So print out this list and give it to everyone you know who thinks they just ďcanítĒ foster.
